Do you have a place you go that feels full of magic – a sacred space? Somewhere you can drop all your worries or bring them forth to be transformed into healing? A place to feel fully yourself where you can relax, think, dream, work out all those feelings, or not think at all if you don’t want to?

I feel lucky enough to have a few of those places. One of them is the room I’m sitting in now. I come here to think, write, meditate, move my body, and create. Another one of those spaces is this pool.

Just after we initially set up the pool and erected the fence!

Since moving to Nashville years ago, I’ve struggled to enjoy summer. It’s so hot that I usually spend the summer months hibernating in the AC, dreaming of autumn. This year I was determined to spend more time outside soaking up as much Vitamin D as possible, so I snagged this little pool from Aldi back in May. Since then, I’ve spent most weekends floating around my 30” deep outdoor tub. It may not be very large, and our attempt at a privacy fence (which won’t stay up for the life of us) may be more of an eyesore than anything else, but I am having a blast.

Not only am I soaking in all the sunshine without feeling like I could croak, but it forces me to disconnect from technology/social media and reconnect with myself and nature – which I’ve been craving more than I’ve realized.

So many new ideas and dreams have been birthed these past few weeks that I can’t wait to start acting on. I have to give a lot of credit to my sacred space for assisting me in feeling safe and supported so that my creative energy could flow freely.

The fence is struggling hardcore, but I'm still enjoying myself!

If you don’t have one of your own already, I encourage you to find or create your own sacred space. There are no rules as to what a sacred space should look or feel like. Every person’s space will be different and should be unique to you. But, if you’re not sure where to even start, I’ve compiled some suggestions for things to consider as you’re creating your own sacred space.

Create Your Own Sacred Space

Nature

If your space is outside, you may already be surrounded by elements of nature. But, if you’re outside in the city, or indoors, consider adding one or more of the following to incorporate natural elements.

  • Water – This doesn’t have to be an entire pool! I have a little zen fountain in my office/meditation/workout room (we call it the Yoga Room) that provides a soothing trickle sound.
  • Plants – Houseplants, cut flowers, an outdoor garden, and sitting under a tree are all great options! I currently have five houseplants in the Yoga Room, and the collection keeps growing…
  • Stones, crystals, and shells are great for grounding and can enhance your energy.

Relaxing Sounds

What does that mean to you? One person’s relaxing sound may be completely different than someone else's. Here are some suggestions: birds chirping, trickling water, your favorite pop songs, meditation music, instrumental Christmas music, heavy metal, or silence.

Lighting

Lighting sets the right mood! I prefer natural light whenever I can get it, but when I need something extra I like: candles, Himalayan salt lamps, and twinkle lights. They add a gentle, soft glow that keeps the vibe so inviting for me.

Seating

What makes you feel physically comfortable? A cushion? Favorite chair? Laying on the floor or a towel in the grass? The support of a pool floaty? Being propped up by pillows in bed?

Scent

When I’m in one of my sacred spaces, I don’t always add scent. However, when I do, the addition of another sense enhances the experience. Some of my favorites are Essential Oils, Scented Candles, a warm beverage like coffee or tea, a smudge stick like sage or cedar, and incense.

Tools

Another thing to have on hand is somewhere to document or express your thoughts. This could include journaling in a notebook, sketching or doodling, recording voice memos, taking videos or photos, playing an instrument, or any other creative way to express yourself!

The most important thing to consider when crafting your sacred space is to ask yourself what makes you feel good. For instance, if you hate scented candles, keep them out of your space! Feeling good is the top priority. When you feel aligned and at ease, you feel safe in the present moment. And when you’re in the present moment, that’s when the magic happens.
